LESSON OVERVIEW

On Day 1, students begin the Historian’s Workshop by learning that historians do more than memorize facts. They observe closely, ask questions, separate what they see from what they think it means, and decide what evidence is still needed. Students study a local image connected to Orr Academy, the West Side, or a Chicago neighborhood and use it as a visual Question Focus. They practice the QFT rules, generate questions without judging or answering them, and begin seeing local history as something worth investigating. This day also introduces course routines, the syllabus, the WolfOS Inquiry Cycle, and PACK norms. The unit plan identifies Day 1 as Observe → Question, with evidence of learning including noticings/wonderings, a question list, and a diagnostic quickwrite.

AT A GLANCE

In this lesson, students will:

  • Study a local image silently.

  • Separate observations from inferences.

  • Identify what evidence is still needed.

  • Learn the QFT four rules.

  • Generate questions from a visual QFocus.

  • Practice PACK norms through partner sharing.

  • Begin thinking like historians.

BELL RINGER

Study the local image silently. Record:

  1. Three things you notice.

  2. Two things you wonder.

  3. Do not explain yet.

OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to:

  • Distinguish observation from inference.

  • Generate questions from a visual QFocus.

  • Follow the four QFT rules.

  • Explain why one question is historically useful.

  • Practice respectful listening during partner sharing.

I CAN STATEMENT

By the end of the lesson, I can:

  1. I can tell the difference between an observation and an inference.

  2. I can generate questions from a visual QFocus without judging or answering them.

  3. I can choose one question that is worth investigating.

  4. I can explain why a question is historically useful.

QFT with Local Visual QFocus

Use the local image as the QFocus. Follow the QFT rules:

  • Ask as many questions as you can.

  • Do not stop to discuss, judge, or answer.

  • Write every question exactly as stated.

  • Change every statement into a question.
