Learning Target

  • I can distinguish observation from inference and generate questions from a visual QFocus by following the QFT rules.

LESSON OVERVIEW

On Day 1, students launch World Studies by exploring the idea that “everything has a beginning.” They will study a visual Question Focus, separate observations from inferences, and generate big questions about the universe, Earth, evidence, and how people understand the distant past. Students will also be introduced to the WolfOS Inquiry Cycle and Pack Norms so they understand that this class is about asking strong questions, using evidence, and learning together respectfully.

AT A GLANCE

In this lesson you will:

  • Explore the idea that “everything has a beginning” through a visual Question Focus.

  • Separate observations from inferences using evidence from an image.

  • Generate strong questions about origins, evidence, and how World Studies investigates the past.

BELL RINGER

  • Study the image silently. Record three things you notice and two things you wonder. Do not explain yet.

OBJECTIVES

  • Distinguish observations from inferences when studying an image or source.

  • Explain what evidence would be needed to support or challenge an inference.

  • Generate meaningful questions from a visual QFocus.

  • Follow the QFT rules without judging, answering, or stopping the process.

  • Share one strong question respectfully with a partner.

I CAN STATEMENT

  1. I can tell the difference between an observation and an inference when I study an image or source.

  2. I can generate questions from a Question Focus without judging, answering, or stopping the process.

  3. I can choose one strong question and explain why it would be useful to investigate.

WELCOME PRESENTATION

  • 5 - 40 - 5 Rhythm...  5 min. for bell ringer; 40 min. for class instruction; 5 min for exit ticket and "I can Statements".

  • Arrive on time:  you should be in your seat working on the Bell Ringer when the bell rings.

  • If you arrive late... Be respectful.  Enter the room quietly, get your Chromebook, and start on the bell ringer if we are still working on it.

  • My classes are entirely digital, please put your Chromebook away at the end of class and plug it back in so that other classes can use them.

  • Do not put away your Chromebooks early and do not line up at the door.  We work bell to bell in this classroom.  If you finish early, please check your work and make sure youve done all the questions.

  • If you didnt finish something in class, please complete it at home.

  • If you have an excused absence, please see me to determine which assignments you need to complete while you were not in class.

WOLFOS SOURCE THINKING PRACTICE

  • Mr. Wolfinger will model the first step (Observe) in the Inquiry Cycle.

  • Students will make observations and inferences about the Learning Cycle.

  • Students will analyze what potential evidence is needed to validate or invalidate their inferences.

  • Students will reflect on Pack Norms and determine which norm they think is most important.
